Troubleshooting Hints - Brake Transaxle Shift Interlock

1. The shift lever should lock in "PARK" with the key in the "RUN" position and the Brake Pedal in the rest position. If the shift lever can be moved from the "PARK" position, with the key in the "RUN" position and without depressing the Brake Pedal, check Turn Signal operation. If the Turn Signals do not operate correctly, check Fuse #16 (Turn/Back-up) to see if it is open (the Turn Signal Flasher is on the same circuit as BTSI). If the Fuse is open, find and the repair source of the overload, then replace Fuse. If the Fuse is good (Turn Signals operate correctly), continue with Diagnostics.
- CHECK for a broken (or partially broken ) wire inside of the insulation which could cause system malfunction but prove "GOOD" in a Continuity/Voltage check with a system disconnected. These Circuits may be intermittent or resistive when loaded, and if possible, should be checked by monitoring for a voltage drop with the system operational (under load).
- CHECK for proper installation of aftermarket Electronic Equipment which may affect the integrity of other systems. (Refer "Troubleshooting Procedures"). Diagnostic Aids
2. With the key in the "OFF" position, the Shift Lever should not move from the "Park" position. If it does, the problem may be with the BTSI Solenoid, or the Shift Linkage itself. If the shift linkage does not appear to be binding, continue with BTSI Diagnostics.
3. If the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch needs Adjustment or Replacement, Refer to Computers and Control Systems. Transmission Position Sensor/Switch
