Third Clutch Assembly, Sprag & Input Sun Gear

1. Install tool J-28456-1 or equivalent onto third clutch, see first image. Do not allow a finger of tool to engage in opening of the retaining ring. Compress the ring by sliding tool J-28456-2 or equivalent over the tool fingers, see second image. Pull the sprag assembly from the third clutch drum, see third image. If ring causes clutch hub to cock, insert punch in slot to fully compress ring. During tool removal, shift clutch pack 9 degrees to prevent ring from sliding back into groove.

2. Remove input shaft-to-input sun gear thrust washer and needle bearing, then the third clutch plates, see image. Keep the plates in the same sequence as removed.

3. Remove input sprag race and retainer assembly from third clutch hub and input sun gear assembly, see first image. Push sprag assembly and retaining rings from sprag race and retainer, see second image.

4. Install compressor J-23O75 on piston retaining seat and compress piston return springs using arbor press, then remove snap ring, see image.

5. Remove retaining seat, 12 piston return springs and clutch piston from the clutch drum, see image.

6. Check piston return springs for heat discoloration or other damage. Replace if necessary.

7. Inspect the check ball in clutch piston. If check ball is missing or falls out or if piston is damaged, replace the piston.

8. Install new lip seal on input shaft inside third clutch drum with lip facing inside of drum, see image. Use tool J-23084 to protect seal during installation.

9. Check steel thrust washer on front face of third clutch drum. Replace if damaged.

10. Lubricate third clutch piston with transmission fluid and install into clutch drum being careful not to damage lip seal. Install 12 clutch piston return springs and retaining seat onto piston. Install compressor J-23075 onto retaining seat to compress return springs and install snap ring. Use caution when pressing retaining seat into position since damage may occur if the seat engages the snap ring groove.

11. Inspect steel and composition clutch plates for wear, burning or other damage.

12. Install third clutch plates into drum starting with the conical steel plate toward the piston, with the outer edge against piston and the inner edge (high) toward the plates. Then alternately install a steel plate, composition plate. Lubricate with automatic transmission fluid during assembly. New composition plates must be soaked in automatic transmission fluid for 15 minutes before installation.

13. Inspect thick thrust washer and needle bearing for damage or wear. Replace, if necessary.

14. Install thrust washer and bearing onto input shaft with the inner lips of bearing facing toward thrust washer. Use petroleum jelly to secure in place.

15. Check sprag assembly for wear or damage. Sprags should not freely fall from cage. Check sun gear for worn or damaged teeth. Replace if necessary.

16. Install sprag onto hub with the flare shoulder on sprag cage outer diameter toward input sun gear, see image.

17. Install sprag race and retainer assembly over sprag assembly. When holding input sun gear, Sprag cage and retainer assembly should "lock up" when turned in a clockwise direction and should rotate freely when turned counterclockwise, see image.

18. Engage clutch hub and sprag assembly to clutch plate splines by slightly rotating the hub and sprag assembly until sprag race rests on clutch drum, see first image. Align teeth of sprag race with splines of clutch drum. Using a small screwdriver, push retaining ring fully into retaining ring groove, at the same time applying pressure on the sprag race, see second image. Slide sprag into third clutch drum until the retaining ring snaps into clutch drum groove. When installing sprag assembly, do not put pressure on sun gear, since this may cause clutch plates to shift, thereby preventing assembly.
