Thermostatic Air Cleaner: Testing and Inspection

Air Cleaner Assembly:






VISUAL INSPECTION

^ Check the vacuum motor retaining screws for looseness.
^ Check all vacuum hoses for loose connections, cracks, or brittleness.
^ Make sure vacuum hoses are at least 3 inches away from any exhaust components, and that none have been burned or melted.

SYSTEM TEST

WARNING: The sensor part of the valve may be immersed for testing purposes, but DO NOT allow water to get inside the ITC valve, as damage may result.
1. Remove air cleaner cover and element.
2. Cool the ITC valve by blowing compressed air on it.
3. Check that the ITC valve closes the cool air passage at idle.
4. Reinstall the air cleaner cover and the filter element, and allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.
5. Watch and verify that the ITC valve opens the cool air passage (at idle) as the engine gets to normal operating temperature.

ITC Valve:






6. Cool the ITC valve to below 95°F with compressed air and blow into port A. There should be air flow from port A to port B.
7. Close port B and no air should flow to the atmosphere.
8. Heat the ITC valve to about 113°F with hot water, and blow into port A.
9. Close port B and air should flow to the atmosphere.
