Evaporator Core: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Discharge refrigerant from system. Care should be taken to avoid excess compressor oil discharge with refrigerant.
3. Drain cooling system and disconnect heater hoses.
4. Remove steering column.
5. Remove center console and instrument panel.
6. Remove instrument panel center support.
7. Disconnect all electrical connections and mode and temperature control cables from heater unit, Fig. 7.
8. Remove defroster and speedometer cable retaining bracket from heater unit.
9. Disconnect fastener bolts, grommets and floor duct from heater case.
10. Remove heater unit.
11. Remove A/C lines from evaporator fittings.
12. Cap all A/C lines and evaporator outlets.
13. Remove attaching bracket and mounting bolts.
14. Remove evaporator assembly.
15. Remove retaining clips and disassemble evaporator housing, Fig. 8.
16. Remove evaporator pipe attaching screws.
17. Disconnect outlet pipe from evaporator core.
18. Disconnect expansion valve and thermistor assembly from evaporator core.
19. Reverse procedure to install. Evacuate and charge A/C system.
