Oil Pump: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove timing belt cover, alternator and power steering belts, then raise and support vehicle.
3. Remove crankshaft pulley, then oil pump attaching bolts and oil pump, Fig. 33.

INSPECTION
1. Measure oil pump driven gear to housing clearance, Fig. 34, using suitable feeler gauge. If clearance is more than 0.078 inch, replace oil pump.
2. Measure oil pump drive gear to driven gear clearance, Fig. 35. If the clearance is more than 0.012 inch, replace the gear set.
3. Measure oil pump body to gear clearance, Fig. 36, using a feeler gauge and precision straightedge. If the clearance is more than 0.004 inch, replace oil pump.

INSTALLATION
1. Apply GM 1052942 sealant or equivalent to oil pump gasket surface.
2. Install oil pump, torque oil pump to block bolts to 89 inch lbs.
3. Install crankshaft pulley, then lower vehicle.
4. Install timing belt cover, then the power steering and alternator belts.
5. Connect battery ground cable.
