Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Ignition Timing: Adjustments

1. Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.

2. Stop engine, turn ignition switch back to "ON" for 5 seconds and then restart engine.

3. Run engine at 2,000 rpm for 5 minutes and then reduce engine speed to idle. Make sure that the idle speed is within specifications.

4. Stop engine and turn all electrical accessories "OFF."

5. Connect a timing light to #1 spark plug wire.

Fixing Ignition Timing:

6. Remove cap from diagnostic connector. Connect "C" and "D" terminals of monitor coupler by using service wire so that ignition timing is fixed.

Checking Ignition Timing:

7. Start engine and aim the timing light at the timing mark. The notch on the crankshaft pulley should line up at 8° before top dead center (BTDC) on the timing indicator at each flash of the timing light. If an adjustment is required:

a. Loosen the distributor flange bolt.
b. While observing the timing light, slowly rotate the distributor until an 8° BTDC reading is obtained.

8. Tighten distributor flange bolt to 11 lb. ft. (15 N-m).

9. Recheck ignition timing and adjust as required.
