1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove gear shift lever as follows:
a. Remove console cover.
b. Remove boot clamp and boot.
c. Remove gear shift lever by pushing down on lever, turning counterclockwise and then pulling up.
3. Remove transfer case lever as follows:
a. Remove shift lever knob screw and knob.
b. Remove two screws, C-clips and console box from floor.
c. Remove shift lever boot bracket and boot, Fig. 3.
d. Remove clamp and case cover boot from shift lever.
e. Remove shift lever case cover by pushing down on case cover and turning counterclockwise.
f. Remove transfer case shift lever.
4. Raise and support vehicle.
5. Remove transfer case skid plate and drain transfer case fluid.
6. Drain transmission fluid.
7. Mark then remove front and rear propeller shaft.
8. Disconnect speedometer cable.
9. Remove catalytic converter to frame bolts and bracket.
10. Support transmission using a suitable transmission jack.
11. Remove transmission crossmember, Fig. 4.
12. Remove breather hose, back-up, fifth gear and 4WD switches, if equipped, connectors.
13. Disconnect clutch linkage and remove starter motor.
14. Remove flywheel inspection cover.
15. Remove transmission to engine bolts then lower transmission assembly.
16. Remove transfer case to transmission bolts.
17. Reverse procedure to install, tightening all fasteners to specifications.
