Throttle Position Sensor: Service and Repair

Throttle Position (TP) Sensor:






REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative (-) battery cable.
2. One bolt, one nut, PCV hose, Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector and Air Cleaner (ACL) from Throttle Body Fuel Injection (TBI) unit.
3. Throttle Position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
4. Two screws and TP sensor from TBI unit.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. TP sensor to TBI unit; secure with two screws. Do not tighten fully.
2. TP sensor electrical connector.
3. PCV hose, IAT electrical connector and ACL to TBI; secure with one bolt and one nut. Tighten ACL bracket bolt to 10 Nm (7.5 lb ft).
4. Negative (-) battery cable. Tighten negative (-) battery cable-to-negative (-) battery terminal.

TP SENSOR ADJUSTMENT
1. Insert a 3.5 mm (0.14 inch) feeler gage between throttle stop screw and throttle lever (refer to image).
2. Inspect the Idle Speed Control (ISC) motor plunger. If ISC motor plunger is contacting throttle lever screw, then the engine must he brought to operating temperature (refer to image).
3. Using a DVM, backprobe the PCM on the TP sensor signal circuit to ground or connect a Scan Tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC) and turn the ignition switch to "ON."
D. While observing TP sensor voltage on the DVM or scan tool, turn the TP sensor until the voltage reading is 0.98 to 1.02 volts (refer to image). Tighten the TP sensor screws to 2.0 Nm (18 lb in).
