Drum Brake System: Service and Repair

Removal
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove wheel and rear hub nuts. Mark relationship between drum and axle for assembly reference.
3. Remove parking lever cover, loosen but do not remove brake cable locking nut.
4. To increase brake shoe to drum clearance, pull shoe hold-down pin about 5 mm.
5. Remove drum by using sliding hammer tool No. J 37781, or equivalent.
6. Remove brake shoes as follows:
a. Remove shoe hold-down springs.
b. Disconnect parking brake lever C-clip from shoe lever.
c. Remove brake shoes, Fig. 5.
d. Remove parking shoe lever from shoe rim.

Installation
1. Install brake shoes as follows:
a. Install parking brake lever to shoe with C-clip.
b. Install strut and springs.
c. Connect parking brake cable to shoe lever, then install brake shoes, Fig. 5.
d. Install shoe hold-down springs.
2. Place a screwdriver between rod and ratchet, then push ratchet for extra clearance, Fig. 6.
3. Install brake drum, then tighten attaching nuts to specifications.
4. Depress brake pedal three to five times to obtain proper shoe to drum clearance.
5. Adjust parking brake cable, then tighten parking lever cover screws and brake cable locking nut.
6. Install wheel assembly.
