Checking Fluid Color, Level and Condition

The automatic transmission fluid level can be checked by means of a fluid level indicator (dipstick), located in the rear of the engine compartment next to the bulkhead. By removing the fluid level indicator from the fluid filler tube, the amount of fluid can be gauged by the amount of fluid on the indicator. If the fluid level is found to be low, only Dexron(R)-III automatic transmission fluid, or equivalent, should be added. Use of any other type of transmission fluid could result in transmission or component failure. Checking fluid level, color and condition at regular intervals will provide early diagnosis information about the transmission. This information may be used to correct a condition that, if not detected early, could result in major transmission repairs. Important: When new automatic transmission fluid is red in color, it indicates that red dye was added to the fluid at the assembly plant to distinguish it from engine oil or engine coolant. This red dye is NOT an indication of fluid quality and is NOT permanent. As the vehicle is driven the fluid will become darker in color and may eventually appear light brown. However, if the fluid becomes extremely dark or loses viscosity, an internal transmission problem may exist.
