Fuel Pressure: Testing and Inspection

Fuel Pump Testing







1. Connect a jumper wire between the two black/yellow wires at the fuel pump cutoff relay connector.

WARNING: Do not smoke during the test. Keep any open flame away from your work area.




2. Disconnect the fuel line at the fuel filter in the engine compartment, and connect a pressure gauge to it as shown.
3. Turn ignition ON until pressure stabilizes, then turn key OFF. Pressure should be 0.15-0.20 kg/cm2 (2-3 psi).
a. If gauge shows at least 0.15 kg/cm2 (2 psi) go on to step 4.
b. If gauge shows less than 0.15 kg/cm2 (2 psi), replace pump and re-test.

NOTE: Check for a clogged fuel filter and/or fuel line before replacing pump.




4. Remove pressure gauge and hold a graduated container under the hose.
5. Turn ignition ON, measure amount of full flow for 60 seconds, then turn ignition OFF. Fuel flow should be more than 480cc (17 oz.) in 60 seconds with battery voltage at 10 volts minimum.

a. If fuel flow is 480cc (17 oz.) or more in 60 seconds, reconnect cut-off relay and fuel hose.
b. If fuel flow is less than 480cc (17 oz.) replace the fuel pump and re-test.

NOTE: Check for a clogged fuel filter and/or fuel line before replacing pump.
