Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Vehicle Speed Sensor: Testing and Inspection

1. Raise and support front of vehicle, block rear wheels and apply hand brake.
2. Push voltmeter or test lamp probe into yellow/black wire terminal at control unit connector. Connect negative probe to suitable ground.
3. Start engine, then place selector lever in second gear or No. 2 position.
4. Accelerate slowly and observe voltmeter.
5. On models equipped with 10 mph sensor, voltage should be present below 6 mph and no voltage above 12 mph.
6. On models equipped with 15 mph sensor, voltage should be present below 11 mph and no voltage above 16 mph.
7. On all models, if voltmeter readings do not correspond with above mph ranges, replace speed sensor and repeat test. If voltage is not present during test, proceed to step 8.
8. Check for faulty electrical connection, fuse or faulty speed sensor. Repair or replace as necessary and repeat test.
