Alternator & Regulator Test

Fig. 1 Connections for alternator performance tests. 1984-87 models:

1. Connect ammeter as shown in Fig. 1, and connect suitable voltmeter across battery terminals.
2. Start engine, turn on headlamps and rear defroster, and set blower fan on high speed.
3. Observe current output on ammeter and voltage reading at battery to compare reading to specifications. Do not allow voltage reading at battery to exceed 19 volts. If voltage reading is over 19 volts, stop engine and replace voltage regulator.
4. If readings are not within specifications, inspect charging system and perform ``Voltage Regulator Test,'' repair system as needed, then repeat test.
5. If current output is still not within specifications, repair or replace alternator.
