When diagnosing a radio noise/interference problem, first try playing a tape. If the noise isn't present when a tape is played, chances are the problem is the antenna. To confirm the problem, temporarily connect a known-good manual antenna to the radio. (Don't forget to ground the metal tab at the antenna mounting screw hole with a jumper wire.
