Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

Ignition Coil: Testing and Inspection

Fig. 8 Ignition Coil Test Connections.:

1988 ACCORD & PRELUDE & 1986-87 EXC. CRX HF & PRELUDE W/CARBURETED ENGINE
Coil resistance varies with temperature. Resistance values given are for coil at 70°F.
1. Ensure ignition switch is off, then disconnect primary electrical connectors and secondary wire from ignition coil.
2. Measure primary winding resistance between terminals A and D on coil, Fig. 8. Resistance should be 1.215-1.485 ohms on 1988 Prelude or 1.2-1.5 ohms on other models.
3. Measure resistance between primary terminal A and secondary winding terminal, Fig. 8. Resistance should be 9040-13,560 ohms on 1988 Prelude or 11,074-11,526 ohms on other models.
4. Measure resistance between primary terminals B and D, Fig. 8. Resistance should be 2090-2310 ohms on 1988 Prelude or approximately 2200 ohms on other models.
5. If resistance values are not as specified, ignition coil is defective.
6. Exc. on 1988 Prelude, check for continuity between terminals A and C and, if there is no continuity, replace coil.
