Body and Frame - Rustproofing

Dear Dealer Principal:

As you may be aware, earlier this year the state of Maryland came out in strong opposition to the sale of "after-manufacture" rustproofing. It appears that other states and consumer-based organizations may soon follow Maryland's example. Before we state our position to anyone else on this subject, we would like to clarify it to you. Our position is:

1. Additional rustproofing is not necessary to maintain the Honda rust perforation warranty. It is the customer's decision whether to purchase additional rustproofing if they intend to keep the car longer than the manufacturer's warranty period, but the purchase should be properly represented to the customer for what it is - an extension of the warranty whereby the rust-proofer is substituted as the warrantor. You should not imply that the rustproofing is necessary to maintain the original warranty, nor give the impression that it is recommended for "added" protection to warranted parts during the original warranty period.

2. Misapplication of after-manufacture rustproofing may actually increase the likelihood that a car will have rust or corrosion problems. The material may plug body drain holes, creating an environment that promotes corrosion. Premature rusting may occur in those areas of the vehicle where holes are newly drilled to apply the material, or the material may interfere, for example, with the vehicle's restraint system, or its door locking and window regulating systems. We cannot overemphasize the importance of proper application and we urge you to ensure that the job is done correctly.
