Starter Motor Grinds
SYMPTOM

An intermittent grinding while the starter motor is engaging.

PROBABLE CAUSE

A faulty overrunning clutch assembly (pinion gear assembly).

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the overrunning clutch assembly with the new part listed under PARTS INFORMATION.

NOTE: This applies only to Nippon Denso, direct drive 0.8 kw, starters.

1. Remove the starter motor as described in Section 23 of the service manual.

2. To ease reassembly, scribe a reference mark between the armature housing and the gear housing.
3. Remove the starter solenoid, then remove the gear housing from the starter.

4. Remove the overrunning clutch assembly:

Place a 12 point, 14 mm deep socket over the armature shaft.

^ Strike the socket with a plastic mallet to loosen the pinion stopper.

^ Remove the spring clip, then remove the pinion stopper.
^ Slide the overrunning clutch assembly off the armature shaft and discard.

5. Slide the new overrunning clutch assembly over the armature shaft.

6. Reinstall the pinion stopper and the spring clip.

7. Fit the pinion stopper over the spring clip:

^ Using a pair of pliers, pull up and hold one end of the pinion stopper.

^ Using a second pair of pliers, press the spring clip into the pinion stopper.

^ While maintaining tension on the first pair of pliers, reposition the second pair and pull up on the other side of the pinion stopper.

8. Partially fit the solenoid lever into the groove of the overrunning clutch assembly. Align the reference mark (made in step 2), and install the gear housing.
9. Install the starter solenoid.

10. Install the starter motor and test.
