Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Component Tests and General Diagnostics

Test Harness Installation:

1. If the inspection for a particular failure code requires the Engine Control Module (ECM) test harness, remove the right door sill molding, the small cover on the right kick panel, and pull the carpet back to expose the ECM.

2. Remove the ECM bracket. Connect the ECM test harness. Then check the system according to the procedure described for the appropriate code(s) listed.

3. The purpose of the ECM test harness is to allow circuit testing without having to back-probe the ECM harness. If the ECM test harness is unavailable, CAREFUL back probing of the ECM harness will have to be performed.

How To Properly Probe Electrical Connections:

CAUTION:
^ Puncturing the insulation on a wire can cause poor or intermittent electrical connections.
^ For testing at connectors other than the test harness, bring the tester probe into contact with the terminal from the connector side of wire harness connectors in the engine compartment. For female connectors, just touch lightly with the tester probe and do not insert the probe.
