MIL Comes On With DTCs P0303 and P0304

SYMPTOM

The MIL comes on with DTC P0303 (No. 3 cylinder misfire detected) and P0304 (No. 4 cylinder misfire detected).

NOTE:
DTC P0300 (random misfire) may also be stored.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The PCM misinterprets inputs as misfires on cylinders 3 and 4.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Update the PGM-FI software with the HDS.

SOFTWARE INFORMATION

HDS Software Version: 2.008.014 or later

NOTE:
If you use an earlier HDS software version, the HDS may show that the vehicle does not need an update when it actually does.





The updated PGM-FI software program ID and P/N are shown below. If this, or a later program ID, is the Current Program ID displayed during the update, the software for this service bulletin is already installed.

DIAGNOSIS

1. Connect the HDS to the vehicle's DLC, and check for DTCs P0303 and P0304.

^ If DTCs P0303 and P0304 are stored, go to step 2.

^ If DTCs P0303 and P0304 are not stored, this service bulletin does not apply.

2. Using the HDS, retrieve the freeze data for the DTCs, and select the GKP Pattern Learn (High Speed) parameter.

^ If the parameter is listed as COMPLETED, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

^ If the parameter is not listed as COMPLETED, continue with normal troubleshooting and then go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Update the PGM-FI software with the HDS. Refer to Service Bulletin 01-023, Updating Control Units/Modules.

2. Do the PGM idle learn procedure:

^ Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are off.

^ Start the engine, and let it reach normal operating temperature (the cooling fans cycle twice).

^ Let the engine idle (with the throttle closed) for 10 minutes.

3. Do the GKP pattern clear and pattern learn procedures with the HDS. (No test-drive is needed.)
