Applies To:

MIL Comes On With DTC P0301 and P0305

(Supersedes 05-056, dated November 29, 2005)
Updated information is shown with asterisks.

SYMPTOM

The MIL is on with DTC P0301 (No. 1 cylinder misfire) and P0305 (No. 5 cylinder misfire).

NOTE:
If this symptom occurs on a vehicle up through VIN JHMCN36..5C006600, make sure the PCM software has been updated as described in Service Bulletin 05-038, Product Update: IMA Battery Software Update. If not, do the product update, then recheck for DTCs P0301 and P0305.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The PGM-FI software may erase GKP pattern learn values (high speed) under certain conditions.* This can cause the PGM to misinterpret inputs on cylinders 1 and 5 as misfires.

First, a GST (Generic Scan Tool) PGM clear or HDS GKP pattern clear is done. If this is followed by a GKP pattern learn, then a test-drive where Idle Stop is done without turning off the ignition switch, the GKP pattern learn values may be erased.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Use the HDS to update the PGM-FI software.
