MIL Is On With DTC P0171
(Supersedes 06-039, dated September 1, 2006, to revise the information marked by asterisks)

*REVISION SUMMARY

Under WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION, the flat rate time was changed because the MVCI updates control modules more efficiently.*

SYMPTOM

The MIL is on with PGM-FI DTC P0171 (rear bank [bank 1] fuel system too lean).

PROBABLE CAUSE

An incorrect PCM calculation indicates a lean condition for fuel bank 1.

NOTE:
The fuel management system and its components are working correctly, and no problem(s) exist; however, the PCM calculation error typically occurs with these factors:

^ Using 10 percent ethanol fuel

^ Driving at high elevation (above 3,000 feet)

^ Driving during hot weather conditions

^ Valve adjustment that's set to the loose side of the specification

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Use the HDS with software version 2.005.008 (or later) to update the PCM PGM-FI software.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Update the PCM PGM-FI software using HDS software version 2.005.008 or later (refer to Service Bulletin 01-023, Updating Control Units/Modules).

2. Verify the vehicle is repaired by using the HDS PGM-FI data list to monitor the bank 1ST (short time) fuel trim.

^ If the bank 1ST fuel trim stays consistently below 1.16 (16 percent lean), the vehicle is repaired.

^ If the bank 1ST fuel trim stays equal to or greater than 1.16, then continue with normal troubleshooting.
