Rear Brake Pad Inspection and ReplacementCAUTION: Frequent inhalation of brake pad dust, regardless of material composition, could be hazardous to your health.
^ Avoid breathing dust particles.
^ Never use an air hose or brush to clean brake assemblies. Use an OSHA-approved vacuum cleaner.
Replacement
1. Remove the brake hose (A) from the knuckle.
2. Hold the pins (B) with a wrench, being careful not to damage the pin boots. Remove the caliper bolts (C), and remove the caliper (D) with inner pad from the caliper bracket.
3. Remove the outer pad (A) and pad shim (B).
4. Remove the inner pad (A) from the caliper.
5. Remove the upper pad retainer (A) and the lower pad retainer (B).
Clean the upper and lower retainers; remove any corrosion.
NOTE: The upper pad retainer and the lower pad retainer are different. During installation, make sure the pad retainers are in proper position.
6. Clean the caliper thoroughly; remove any rust, and check for grooves and cracks.
7. Check the brake disc for damage and cracks.
8. Apply Molykote M-77 assembly paste to the pad retainers on their mating surface against the caliper bracket (C) and brake pads. Wipe excess assembly paste off the retainers. Contaminated brake discs and brake pads reduce stopping ability. Keep assembly paste and grease off the brake discs and brake pads.
9. Install the pad retainers.
10. Apply Molykote M-77 assembly paste to the pad shim (A), the back of the outer pad (B), and the other areas indicated by arrows. Wipe excess assembly paste off the retainers. Contaminated brake discs and brake pads reduce stopping ability. Keep assembly paste and grease off the brake discs and brake pads.
11. Install the outer pad and pad shim.
12. Push in the piston (A) so the caliper will fit over the brake pads. Check the brake fluid level. The brake fluid may overflow if the reservoir is too full. Make sure the piston boot is in position to prevent damaging it when installing the caliper.
13. Apply Molykote M-77 assembly paste to the piston edge on it mating surface against the inner pad (B), and areas in the inner pad indicated by arrows. Wipe excess assembly paste off the retainers. Contaminated brake discs and brake pads reduce stopping ability. Keep assembly paste and grease off the brake discs and brake pads.
14. Push the pad hold spring (C) into the piston, then install the inner pad with the indicator (D) on the lower side.
15. Install the caliper (A) and caliper bolts (B), and torque them to the specified torque while holding the pin (C). Be careful not to damage the pin boots.
16. Install the brake hose (D) to the knuckle.
17. Press the brake pedal several times to make sure the brakes work. Install the front wheels.
NOTE: Engagement of the brake may require a greater pedal stroke immediately after the brake pads have been replaced as a set. Several applications of the brake pedal will restore the normal pedal stroke.
18. After installation, check for leaks at hose and line joints or connections, and retighten if necessary. Then test-drive the vehicle.
