VTEC Rocker Arms
VTEC Rocker Arm TestSpecial Tools Required
- VTEC air adapter 07VAJ-P8A010A
- VTEC air stopper 070AJ-0030100
- Air pressure regulator 07AAJ-PNAA100
J35A6 Engine
1. Start the engine and let it run for 5 minutes, then turn OFF the ignition switch.
2. Remove the intake manifold.
3. Remove the cylinder head covers.
4. Set the No. 1 piston at top dead center (TDC).
5. Push on the intake mid rocker arm (A) at the No. 1 cylinder. The mid rocker arm should move independently of the primary rocker arm (B) and secondary rocker arm (C).
- If the mid rocker arm moves freely, repeat the above procedure for the remaining intake mid rocker arms with each piston at TDC. When all the mid rocker arms pass the test, go to step 6.
- If the intake mid rocker arm does not move, remove the mid, primary, and secondary intake rocker arms as an assembly, then check that the synchronizing pistons in the mid and primary rocker arms move smoothly. If any rocker arm needs replacing, replace the primary, mid, and secondary rocker arms as an assembly, and retest.
6. Check that the air pressure on the shop air compressor gauge indicates over 690 kPa (7.0 kgf/cm2, 100 psi).
7. Inspect the valve clearance.
8. Remove the No. 1 and No. 6 intake rocker shaft mounting bolts, then install and connect the special tools as shown.
9. Loosen the valve on the regulator, and apply the specified air pressure.
Specified Air Pressure: 440 - 540 kPa (4.5 - 5.5 kgf/cm2, 64 - 78 psi)
NOTE: If the synchronizing pistons do not move after applying air pressure, move the primary or secondary rocker arm up and down manually.
10. Make sure that the intake primary rocker arm (A) and intake secondary rocker arm (B) are mechanically connected by the synchronizing pistons and that the mid rocker arm (C) does not move when pushed manually. If any intake mid rocker arm moves independently of the primary and secondary rocker arms, replace the rocker arms as a set.
11. Remove the special tools.
12. Tighten the rocker shaft bolts to 24 Nm (2.4 kgf/m, 17 ft. lbs.)
13. Install the cylinder head covers.
14. Install the intake manifold.
Special Tools Required
- Air pressure regulator 07AAJ-PNAA100
- VTEC air adapter 07VAJ-P8A010A
J35A7 Engine (Rear)
1. Remove the rear cylinder head cover.
2. Set the No. 1 piston at top dead center (TDC).
3. Push on the intake primary rocker arm (A) at the No. 1 cylinder. Make sure that the primary rocker arm, intake secondary rocker arm A (B) and secondary rocker arm B (C) are mechanically connected by the synchronizing pistons.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for cylinders No. 2 and 3.
- If any primary rocker arm moves independently, remove the rocker arm, and verify the synchronizing pistons move freely.
- If any intake rocker arm needs replacing, replace it as an assembly.
5. Set the No. 1 piston at top dead center (TDC).
6. Move the exhaust secondary rocker arms (A) up and down manually. Using a mirror (B), visually check that the secondary rocker arms are mechanically connected to the primary rocker arms (C).
7. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for cylinders No. 2 and 3.
- If any primary rocker arm moves independently, remove the rocker arm, and verify the synchronizing pistons move freely.
- If any intake rocker arm needs replacing, replace it as an assembly. When the rocker arms pass the test, go to step 9.
8. Check that the pressure on the shop air compressor gauge indicates over 200 kPa (2.0 kgf/cm2, 28 psi).
9. Inspect the valve clearance.
10. Set the No. 1 piston at TDC.
11. Install and connect the special tools as shown.
12. Loosen the valve on the regulator, and apply the specified air pressure.
Specified Air Pressure 200 kPa (2.0 kgf/cm2, 28 psi)
13. Push on the intake primary rocker arm (A) at the No. 1 cylinder. Make sure that the primary rocker arm, intake secondary rocker arm A (B), and secondary rocker arm B (C) move independently.
14. Move the exhaust secondary rocker arms (A) up and down manually. Using a mirror (B), visually check that the secondary rocker arms move independently from the primary rocker arms (C). Shut off the air pressure.
15. Repeat steps 11 through 13 for cylinders No. 2 and 3.
- If the primary rocker arms and secondary rocker arms move together, remove the rocker arm, and verify the synchronizing pistons move freely.
- If any intake rocker arm needs replacing, replace it as an assembly.
16. Remove the special tools.
17. Install the cylinder head cover.
