Camshaft Gear/Sprocket: Service and Repair
Camshaft, Rocker Arm, Camshaft Seal, and Pulley InstallationJ35A6 Engine:
1. Reassemble the rocker arm assembly.
2. Apply a light coat of new engine oil around the camshaft oil seal.
3. Gently tap the new camshaft oil seal (A) into the cylinder head.
1 Tap the camshaft oil seal in squarely.
2 Install the oil seal about 0.5 - 1.5 mm (0.02 - 0.06 inch) below the surface of the cylinder head.
4. Insert the camshaft (B) into the cylinder head, then install the camshaft thrust cover (C). Always use a new O-ring (D).
5. Check that the oil seal lips are not distorted.
6. Install the solid dowel pins (E) and the hollow dowel pins (F).
7. Loosen the valve adjusting screw locknuts and screws.
8. If the rocker arm assembly is disassembled, reassemble it.
9. Set the rocker arm assembly in place, and loosely install the bolts. Make sure that the rocker arms are properly positioned on the valve stems.
10. Tighten each bolt two turns at a time in the sequence shown below to ensure that the rockers do not bind on the valves.
NOTE: Apply engine oil to the threads and flanges of the exhaust rocker shaft mounting bolts.
11. Install the injector base (A). Always use a new gasket (B).
12. Apply new engine oil to the threads of the camshaft pulley mounting bolt (A). Install the back cover (B), then install the camshaft pulley (C).
13. Set the camshaft pulleys with cylinder No. 1 at top dead center (TDC).
J35A7 Engine:
1. Reassemble the rocker arm assembly.
2. Apply a light coat of new engine oil around the camshaft oil seal.
3. Gently tap the new camshaft oil seal (A) into the front cylinder head.
1 Tap the camshaft oil seal in squarely.
2 Install the oil seal about 0.5 - 1.5 mm (0.02 - 0.06 inch) below the surface of the cylinder head.
4. Insert the camshaft (B) into the front cylinder head, then install the camshaft thrust cover (C). Always use a new O-ring (D).
5. Check that the oil seal lips are not distorted.
6. FRONT: Install the hollow dowel pins (E) and the solid dowel pins (F).
7. REAR: Clean the rear cylinder head cover contacting surfaces. Remove the packing and liquid packing from rear cylinder head.
8. REAR: Apply Honda liquid gasket, P/N 080717-0004, 08718-0001, 08718-0003, or 08718-0009, to the rocker shaft holder surface on the rear cylinder head as shown in the shaded area (A).
- Do not install the parts if more than 4 minutes have elapsed since applying the liquid gasket. Remove liquid gasket, and reapply.
- Do not touch the liquid gasket.
9. Loosen the valve adjusting screw locknuts and screws.
10. If the rocker arm assembly is disassembled, reassemble it.
11. Set the rocker arm assembly in place, and loosely install the bolts. Make sure that the rocker arms are properly positioned on the valve stems.
12. Tighten each bolt two turns at a time in the sequence as shown to ensure that the rockers do not bind on the valves.

14. Apply new engine oil to the threads of the camshaft pulley mounting bolt (A). Install the back cover (B), then install the camshaft pulley (C).
