Automatic Transmission Removal (5-Speed A/T)




Automatic Transmission Removal

Special Tools Required

- Engine Support Hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256
- 2008 V6 Attachment Arm SIL02C000033
- Engine Hanger Balance Bar VSB02C000019
- Subframe Adapter VSB02C000016

NOTE:

- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- Special tool, Reds engine support hanger AAR-T1256 must be used with the side engine mount installed.

1. Open the hood, and secure it with the hood support rod (A) in the wide-open position (B).






2. Remove the engine cover.

3. Drain the power steering fluid from the reservoir Testing and Inspection.

4. Set the front wheels in the straight ahead position, and lock the steering wheel.

5. Remove the air intake scoop (A).






6. Do the battery removal procedure.

7. Remove the front bulkhead cover Front Bulkhead Cover Replacement.

8. Remove the cowl cover Service and Repair.

9. Remove the air cleaner Service and Repair.

10. Remove the intake air duct.






11. Remove the bolt (A) securing the main under-hood fuse box (B), then remove the harness clamps (C) from the battery base. Remove the main under-hood fuse box.






12. Remove the mounting bolts (A), and loosen the mounting bolts (B), then remove the harness clamps (C) and the battery base (D).






13. Remove the steering joint cover (A).





14. Make reference marks (B) across the steering joint (C) and the steering gearbox pinion shaft (D). If the center guide is still installed, take care not to displace it. If the center guide is no longer installed, or is displaced during when the joint is disconnected, refer to the reference marks to reinstall the joint. Loosen the steering joint bolt (E), then install the steering wheel holder tool.

15. Remove the steering joint bolt, then disconnect the steering joint from the steering gearbox pinion shaft.

NOTE: Hold the lower slide shaft on the column with a piece of wire (F) between the joint yoke of the lower slide shaft and the joint yoke of the upper shaft to prevent the slider shaft from pulling out.

16. Cover the drive belt auto-tensioner, the alternator, and the A/C compressor with several shop towels to protect them from spilled power steering fluid. Remove the power steering pump outlet hose (A) from the power steering pump, and remove the hose clamp bolt (B). Cover the opening of the pump and the pump outlet hose with a piece of tape to prevent foreign material from entering either the pump or the outlet hose. Take care not to spill fluid on the vehicle. Wipe off any spilled fluid at once.






17. Remove the positive starter cable (A), and disconnect the S terminal connector (B) from the starter.





18. Remove the harness clamps (C) from their brackets (D), and remove the upper radiator hose bracket (E).

19. Remove the ATF dipstick (F).

20. Remove the starter (A) with the harness clamp bracket (B) and the gasket (C) from the transmission.






21. Insert the dipstick back into the dipstick guide tube.

22. Remove the spring clip (A) and the control pin (B), then separate the shift cable end (C) from the selector control lever (D).





23. Remove the nuts securing the shift cable bracket (E).

24. Check the bushing (F) in the shift cable end for proper fit and wear. If the bushing is loose or worn, replace the shift cable Shift Cable Replacement (5-Speed A/T).

25. Disconnect these connectors:

- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector (A)
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector (B)
- Transmission fluid pressure switch C (4th clutch) connector (C)
- Shift solenoid wire harness connector (D)





26. Remove the bolt securing the harness cover (E), and remove the harness cover from its bracket (F).

27. Disconnect these connectors:

- Transmission range switch connector (A)
- Input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (B)





28. Remove the harness clamp (A) from its bracket.





29. Disconnect these connectors:

- Output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (B)
- Transmission fluid pressure switch B (3rd clutch) connector (C)
- ATF temperature sensor connector (D)

30. Disconnect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector (A).





31. Remove the harness cover mounting bolt (B), and remove the harness cover (C) from its bracket (D).

32. Disconnect the transmission fluid pressure switch A (2nd clutch) connector.






33. Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses (A) from the ATF cooler lines (B). Turn the ends of the cooler hoses up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the cooler hoses and lines.






34. Check for any signs of leakage at the hose joints.

35. Remove the bolt (A) securing the connector bracket (B) from the front cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole (C) to attach the engine hanger balance bar front arm.






36. Remove the bolt (A) securing the harness bracket (B) from the rear cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole (C) to attach the 2008 V6 attachment arm.






37. Install the engine hanger balance bar (VSB02C000019). Attach the front arm (A) to the front cylinder head with a 10 mm (0.39 in) spacer (B) and a 10 x 1.25 mm bolt (C). Remove the rear arm from the engine hanger balance bar, then install the 2008 V6 attachment arm (SIL02C000033). Attach the 2008 V6 attachment arm to the rear cylinder head with a 10 mm (0.39 in) spacer (D) and an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt (E).





38. Remove the hood opener cable clip (F). Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle as shown, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger balance bar. Tighten the wing nut (G) by hand, to lift and support the engine.

NOTE:

- Be careful when working around the windshield.
- Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead.
- AAR-T1256 two sets required for stacking additional cross section bar.

39. Remove the ATF dipstick.

40. Remove the front subframe damper (A).






41. Remove the front engine mount stop (A), then remove the bolt (B) securing the front engine mount.





42. Disconnect the front engine mount actuator connector (C), and remove the harness clamp (D) from its bracket.

43. Insert the dipstick back into the dipstick guide tube.

44. Remove the upper transmission housing mounting bolts.






45. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.

46. Remove the front wheels.

47. Remove the front inner fender on both sides Front Inner Fender Replacement.

48. Remove the front splash shield Service and Repair.

49. Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the automatic transmission fluid (ATF).





50. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer (B).

51. Remove the torque converter case cover (A), and remove the eight bolts (B) while rotating the crankshaft pulley.






52. Insert a hex wrench (A) in the top of the stabilizer link ball joint pin (B), and remove the nut (C), then remove the stabilizer link (D) from the knuckle on both sides.





53. Remove the cotter pin (E) and the nut (F), and remove the tie-rod end ball joint (G) from the knuckle on both sides Ball Joint Removal.

54. Remove the lock pin (H) and the castle nut (I), and remove the lower arm ball joint (J) from the knuckle on both sides Ball Joint Removal.

55. Remove exhaust pipe A Service and Repair.

56. Disconnect the power steering fluid hose (A) from the power steering fluid line (B) Turn the end of the hose up to prevent power steering fluid from flowing out, then plug the hose and cap the line.






57. Disconnect the PSP switch connector.






58. Disconnect the rear engine mount actuator connector.






59. Remove the transmission ground cable bracket (A).





60. Remove the lower transmission mount bolts (B).

61. Remove the bolt (A) securing the power steering heat shield.





62. Remove the bolts (B) securing the rear engine mounting base.

63. Attach the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the front subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), then tighten the wing nut (C).





64. Raise a transmission jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then attach them with the bolts.

65. Remove the six bolts securing the stiffeners (A) and the four bolts securing the front subframe (B), then lower the front subframe.

NOTE: Check that the front subframe is free of the hoses and the electrical wiring.






66. Place the transmission jack under the transmission.

67. Remove the left side driveshaft from the differential. Coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bag over the left driveshaft end. Support the left side driveshaft with nylon strap.

NOTE: Plug the left side driveshaft hole (A) to prevent dirt and solvent from entering the transmission.






68. Remove the rear warm up three way catalytic converter (WU-TWC) bracket (A), and remove the right side driveshaft (B).

NOTE: Plug the right side driveshaft hole (C) to prevent dirt and solvent from entering the transmission.





69. Coat all precision finished surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over the right side driveshaft. Support the right side driveshaft with nylon strap.

70. Remove the driveshaft support base (A).






71. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor cover (A), and disconnect the CKP sensor connector (B).






72. Remove the front engine mount bracket.





73. Check that the transmission is completely free of the hoses and the electrical wiring.

74. Remove the front transmission housing mounting bolts (A).





75. Remove the front transmission housing mounting bolt (B).

76. Remove the rear transmission housing mounting bolts.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the CKP sensor.






77. Remove the lower transmission housing mounting bolts.






78. Check once again that the transmission is free of hoses and electrical wiring.

79. Slide the transmission away from the engine to remove it from the vehicle.

80. Remove the torque converter (A), the O-ring (B), and the dowel pins (C).






81. Inspect the drive plate, and replace it if it is damaged Drive Plate Removal and Installation (5-Speed A/T).

82. Remove the clamp bracket (A) and the harness cover bracket (B) from the transmission.
