Timing Cover: Service and Repair

Fig. 31 Timing Case, Oil Pump & Counter Balance Shaft Exploded View:





1. Remove oil filter, pan, screen and gaskets, Fig. 31.
2. Remove relief plunger and gasket, then disconnect relief spring and valve from oil filter bracket.
3. Remove four attaching bolts, then the oil filter bracket and gasket.
4. Remove oil plug cap from oil pump portion of front case.
5. Keep counter balance shaft in position by inserting a screwdriver through plug hole in left side of cylinder block and remove oil pump driven gear securing bolt.
6. Remove attaching bolts, then the front case and gasket.
7. Remove two counter balance shaft from cylinder block.
8. Remove oil pump cover from front case, then the gears.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Check gear teeth and front case for excessive wear or damage.
b. Check journals for wear or seizure.
c. Check for timing marks found on reverse side of each gear.
d. Using oil seal guide tool 09214-32100 or equivalent on crankshaft, install guide ensuring smaller diameter end will face front of engine.
e. When inserting left countershaft balance shaft into cylinder block, install front case.
f. Insert screwdriver through plug hole in left side of cylinder block before torquing gear bolt.
g. Apply sealant into groove of oil pan flange.
