Valve Guide: Service and Repair

1. Check valve stem to guide clearance. If clearance exceeds service limit, replace with next oversize part as follows:
a. Press old valve guide from cylinder head toward cylinder block mating surface, using pushrod of valve guide installer tool No. 09222-21200 or 09222-28400, or equivalents.
b. Machine valve guide bore in cylinder head to 0.4744-0.4751 inch for valve guides marked "5" (0.002 inch), 0.4822-0.4829 inch for valve guides marked "25" (0.010 inch) or 0.4921-0.4928 inch for valve guides marked "50" (0.020 inch).

c. Press fit new valve guide into rocker arm side of cylinder head using valve guide installer, Fig. 10 Valve guide installer installs valve guide to a predetermined height. If this tool is not available, ensure distance between cylinder head and top of guide is 0.768 inch.
d. After installation of new guides, install valves and ensure ease of movement, then check for correct valve contact and seating. Recondition valve seats, if necessary.
