Vehicle Speed Sensor: Testing and Inspection




VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS)
The vehicle speed sensor is a hall 10 type. The speed sensor converts the transaxle gear revolutions into pulse signals, which are sent to the ECM.

INSPECTION
1. Disconnect the speed sensor connector and remove the speed sensor.
2. Connect the positive (+) lead from battery to terminal 2 and the negative (-) lead to terminal 1.
3. Connect the positive (+) lead from tester to terminal 1 and negative (-) lead to terminal 3.
4. Turn the speed meter shaft using a flat driver.
5. Check for a voltage change from about 0V to 11 V or more between terminals 1 and 3.
6. The voltage change should be 4 times per each revolution of the shaft.

NOTE: If there is an open or short circuit in the vehicle speed sensor signal circuit, the engine may stall when decelerating to stop the vehicle.
