Starting and Charging: Service Precautions

AIR BAG SYSTEM DISARMING AND ARMING
Disarming
1. Turn ignition switch to Off position.
2. Remove battery ground cable.
3. Wait at least ten minutes after disconnecting the ground cable before performing any service procedures. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is designed to retain enough voltage to deploy the air bag(s) for a short time even after the ground cable has been disconnected. Performing service before the minimum ten minute period may cause unexpected deployment and possible injury.

Arming
1. Turn ignition switch to Off position, then ensure no one is inside vehicle and connect battery ground cable.
2. Turn ignition switch to On position and note air bag warning lamp operation. Lamp should light for approximately seven seconds, then turn off.
3. If lamp remains lit, does not light or continues to flash, there is an SRS fault. Refer to Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems) for troubleshooting procedures.

FUEL PRESSURE RELIEF
1. Remove fuel pump relay, then start engine.
2. Start engine and let it run until it stalls.
2. Crank engine 2 or 3 more times to release remaining fuel pressure.
3. Turn ignition switch Off, then reconnect fuel pump relay.

AIR CONDITIONING REFRIGERANT PRECAUTIONS
R134A Refrigerant
1. R-12 and R-134a refrigerant must never be mixed. If refrigerants are mixed, compressor failure will probably occur.
2. When filling system with oil, use specified A/C System lubricant. If specified oil is not used, compressor failure will probably occur.
3. Nissan A/C System Type R Part No. KLH00-PAGRO or equivalent refrigerant oil absorbs moisture from the atmosphere at a rapid rate, the following precautions must be followed when using this lubricant:
a. When removing components from the vehicle, immediately cap component to minimize the entry of moisture from the atmosphere.
b. When installing components on a vehicle, do not remove cap until just before connecting components. Complete connection of all refrigerant loop components as quickly as possible to minimize entry of moisture into system.
c. Use specified lubrication oil from a sealed container only. Containers must be sealed immediately after dispensing lubrication oil. Lubrication oil in containers which are not properly sealed will become moisture saturated.
d. Avoid breathing A/C refrigerant and lubricant vapor or mist. Exposure may irritate eyes, nose and throat.
e. When removing refrigerant from the system, always use service equipment certified by the requirements of SAE J2210 (R-134a recycling equipment) or J2209 (R-134a recovery equipment). If accidental system discharge does occur, ventilate work area before resuming system service.
f. Do not allow lubrication oil to come in contact with styrofoam parts. Damage may result.

R12 Refrigerant
1. Do not release refrigerant into the air. Use approved recovery/recycling equipment to capture refrigerant every time the A/C system is discharged.
2. Always wear eye and hand protection when working with any A/C system.
3. Do not store or heat refrigerant containers above 125°F (52°C).
4. Do not heat refrigerant with an open flame, if container needs warming, place bottom of container in a warm pail of water.
5. Keep refrigerant away from open flames, a poisonous gas will be produced if refrigerant burns.
6. Refrigerant will displace oxygen, be certain to work in a well ventilated area.
7. Do not introduce compressed air to any refrigerant container or component.

BRAKE FLUID SAFETY
Do not allow brake fluid to contact painted areas, never reuse brake fluid and never use mineral oils such as gasoline or kerosine that will ruin rubber parts of hydraulic system.

THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM
To cancel the system and prevent accidental activation, perform any one of the following:
1. Using the key, unlock either the driver's or passenger's door.
2. Using the multi-remote control system, if installed, unlock doors.
3. Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position.
4. Using the key, unlock the trunk lid. The system is only temporarily canceled while the trunk lid is open. After the trunk lid is closed, the system is reset.
5. To set the system, remove the key from the ignition, and close the doors, trunk, and hood. Then lock all doors either manually using individual door lock buttons, or activate the power lock system with either the key or the multi remote control system.
