Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Service Procedure

1. Check the transmission fluid; confirm it is at the full level and is not burnt.

If the fluid is burnt, this bulletin does not apply. Use the Service Manual (ESM) to further diagnosis and repair the incident.

2. Print the Freeze Frame data (if available) for stored DTC(s).

3. Erase stored DTC(s).

4. Inspect vehicle harness-to-transmission connectors (see Figure 1).

^ With the ignition ON, perform "wiggle test", then check for DTC's.

^ If no "malfunction" is found with the connector(s) (if they are OK), go to step 5.

^ If a malfunction is found with the connector(s)-DTC is stored during wiggle test:

a. Erase the stored DTC(s).

b. Repair the connector(s) as needed. Refer to the Connector and Terminal Pin Service Manual found in ASIST under INFO Tool Box-Tools & Equipment.

c. Then go to step 5.

5. Perform the "DTC confirmation procedure" for one applied stored DTC from step 2. Refer to the AT section of the applicable Service Manual (ESM).

NOTE:
For applied DTC(s), see Table A.

A. If you found only one applied DTC stored, do a DTC confirmation for that DTC.

B. If more then one applied DTC was stored, choose only one DTC and perform that confirmation procedure.

^ If no DTC is confirmed (duplicated), perform the following two steps in order:

a. Reprogram the Transmission Control Module (TCM), step 18.

b. Perform Transmission Control Module (TCM) Initialization, step 20.

^ If any applied Automatic Transmission related DTC is confirmed (duplicated), perform the following three steps in order:

a. Replace the control valve assembly.

b. Reprogram the Transmission Control Module (TCM).

c. Perform Transmission Control Module (TCM) Initialization.

Replace the Control Valve Assembly (if needed). Remove the Control Valve Assembly:

1. Close the sunroof and windows (if open).

2. Write down all the radio presets for later reprogramming.

3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

4. Disconnect the right side (passenger side) heated oxygen sensor 2 (rear) harness connector.

5. Remove the transmission oil pan plug to drain the ATF. Then reinstall the drain plug with a new gasket. Tighten the drain plug to: 29 - 39 N-m (3.0 - 4.0 kg-m, 22-29 ft-lb).

6. Remove the transmission oil pan.

7. Disconnect connectors shown in Figure 2.

Caution:
Be careful not to damage connectors.

8. Remove bolts A, B and C from control valve assembly.

9. Remove the control valve assembly from the transmission case.

CAUTION:
When removing, be careful with the manual valve and the manual plate. Remove straight down, don't tilt it.

Install the new Control Valve Assembly:

10. Install the Control Valve Assembly to the transmission case.

CAUTION:
When installing, be careful with the manual valve and the manual plate. Install straight up, don't tilt it.

11. Install bolts for control valve assembly (see Figure 3).

a. Install bolts "finger tight" to hold control valve assembly in place.

b. First, tighten bolts 1---> 2 and ---> 3 in that order.

c. Then tighten other A, B and C bolts in any order. Make sure the washer is back in place on bolt C.

NOTE:
Tighten bolts to: 6.9-8.8 N.m (0.71-0.89 kg-m, 61-77 in-lb).

12. Reconnect connectors shown in Figure 2.

13. Secure connectors and harnesses in clips as shown in Figure 2.

14. Install oil pan using a new gasket.

^ Make sure the drain plug is located at the right side (passenger side) rear.

^ Tighten oil pan bolts to: 6.9-8.8 N.m (0.71-0.89 kg-m, 61-77 in-lb).

^ Make sure drain plug is tight. Tighten to: 29-39 N.m (3.0-4.0 kg-m, 22-29 ft-lb).

CAUTION:
Do not reuse the old oil pan gasket.

15. Connect heated oxygen sensor 2 harness connector and negative battery cable.

16. Refill the transmission with Nissan Matic-J.

CAUTION:
Use ONLY Nissan Matic-J fluid in this transmission. See ITB01-010 for more details.

17. Reprogram the radio station presets.

Reprogram TCM:

18. Perform TCM Reprogramming to install the latest available TCM data.

^ If you do not know how to do TCM Reprogramming;

^ see the "Transmission Control Module (TCM) Reprogramming" attachment shown in this bulletin.

^ If you do know how to do TCM Reprogramming;

A) From the ASIST TCM Reprogramming screen, pick the model and model year for the car you are working on (see Figure 4).

B) Pick the right type of vehicle from the list just above the word "Summary".

^ If there is only one item listed ("Update for all Models"), go to step C.

^ If there is multiple choice, pick the right type of vehicle from the list, then go to step C.

C) Write down the "To" number shown in the Summary box of ASIST.

NOTE:
The "To" number will read something like: 31036-*****.

D) Click the "Continue" button on the TCM Data Reprogramming and follow directions to perform data download from ASIST to CONSULT-II.

19. Perform TCM Reprogramming from CONSULT-II to update the vehicle's TCM data (to the newest Part Number).

IMPORTANT:
TCM Initialization MUST BE DONE or the repair will not work.

Perform TCM Initialization:

20. Perform TCM Initialization (using the Red and White Diagnostic Card) as follows:

A. Attach CONSULT-II to the vehicle, turn the ignition switch "ON" (do not start the engine); confirm that CONSULT-II turns ON

B. Move the A/T shift lever to the "R" position.

C. Touch "START" on CONSULT-II.

D. On CONSULT-II, select "A/T" - "SELF-DIAG RESULTS"

E. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and hold it in the fully open position. This will set the idle switch to OFF.

F. On CONSULT-II, touch "ERASE", and then touch "YES".

G. Wait 3 seconds and then release the accelerator pedal.

H. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position.

I. Move the A/T shift lever to the "P" position.

J. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.

K. Look at the A/T shift indicator lamp (on the instrument cluster). After 3 seconds, the indicator lamp "P" should illuminate" (come ON).

L. If the indicator lamp "P" does not illuminate after 3 seconds, or illuminates immediately, return to step 2 and perform the initialization process again.

M. After the initialization process is successful ("P" illuminated correctly in step K), turn CONSULT "ON" and select "ENGINE" - "SELF-DIAG RESULTS". Erase the DTC (U1000 "CAN COMMUNICATION" LINE")

N. Turn CONSULT II "OFF" and disconnect it from the vehicle.

0. Test-drive the vehicle with light throttle application (approximately 1/8 throttle with engine rpm less than 2000). Vehicle should up-shift through all gears (1-2, 2-3, 3-4 and 4-5) at appropriate speeds. See the AT section of the appropriate Service Manual for shift schedule specifications.

21. Confirm transmission operates correctly in all modes and that DTC(s) are not stored.
