NOTE
Pickups produced in Japan have VINs starting with "JAA". Pickups produced in the U.S. have VINs starting with "4S1".

Some affected vehicles may experience a squeaking noise coming from the steering column when making turns. This noise is caused by insufficient lubrication in the steering column joint.

To eliminate this condition, apply a new, improved grease (listed in "Parts Information" section of this Service Bulletin) to the steering column joint, as described in this Service Bulletin.

1. Ensure that the steering wheel is straight.

2. Apply a setting mark across the universal joint and steering shaft, for ease of reassembly.

3. Remove the steering column from the vehicle as described in the appropriate Workshop Manual.

4. Secure the steering column in a vise.

5. Remove the wire clamp securing the trunnion joint boot to the upper steering column, and pull the boot back to expose the joint.

6. Remove the joint block.

7. Wash out all old grease thoroughly from inside the upper steering column joint housing.

8. Install a generous (approx. 1 oz.) amount of grease (listed in "Parts Information" section of this Service Bulletin) into the upper steering column joint housing.

9. Carefully slide the boot over the trunnion joint and secure with a tie strap.

10. Reinstall the steering column into the vehicle, as described in the appropriate Workshop Manual, aligning the setting marks that were made in Step 2.

11. Road test the vehicle to ensure proper steering operation.
