Steering: Testing and Inspection

Prior to testing the power steering hydraulic system, ensure the power steering reservoir fluid is at the proper level, the engine is at normal operating temperature and that the pump drive belt is properly tightened.

1. Place suitable container under power steering pump to catch spilled fluid.
2. With the engine Off, disconnect pressure hoses at steering gear and power steering pump.
3. Install gauge tool No. J 5176-E, or equivalent, to both hoses, ensuring gauge is between the shutoff valve and pump.
4. Open shutoff valve.
5. Remove filler cap from pump reservoir and ensure fluid level is FULL.
6. Start engine, turn steering wheel to right and left stop and hold momentarily. Check for leaks at gauge tool.
7. Refer to Power Steering System Bleed for outline of bleeding procedure.
8. Insert thermometer in reservoir. Temperature should be 150-170° F.
9. Check power steering reservoir fluid level is FULL.
10. Initial pressure reading (valve open) should be 80-125 psi. If pressure is in excess of 200 psi, check for restrictions in poppet valve.
11. Do not fully close valve for more than five seconds at a time, as pump damage may occur.
12. Fully close valve three times and record the highest readings.
13. If recorded readings are within 1100-1200 psi and all are within 50 psi of one another, the pump is functioning properly.
14. If recorded reading are high but not within 50 psi of each other, the flow control valve is sticking. Remove valve and clean/de-burr it. If valve and system is exceptionally dirty, the pump and gear must be disassembled, flushed and reassembled.
15. If pump is within specifications, proceed as follows:
a. Leave valve open and turn steering wheel from lock-to-lock.
b. Record highest pressures and compare with maximum pump pressure recorded.
c. If this pressure can not be reached in either one or both sides, the gear is leaking internally and must be replaced.
16. Shut engine OFF and remove testing gauge.
17. Connect pressure hose, check fluid level and check for leakage.
18. If problem still exists, thoroughly inspect front suspension and steering.
