Pinion Depth Adjustment
1. Clean all gauge parts.2. Lubricate front and rear pinion bearings with axle lubricant.
3. Place pinion bearings into cups.
4. Install tool Nos. J 21777-40, J 21777-42, J 21777-43 and J 23597-11, or equivalents, into pinion bore.
5. Hold stud stationary at the flats of stud and torque to 20 inch lbs.
6. Rotate gauge plate and bearings several complete revolutions to seat bearings.
7. Torque stud nut to 15-25 inch lbs.
8. Install tool Nos. J 21777-45, J 23597-11 and J 8001, or equivalents, into bearing bore and torque the side bearing caps to 55 ft. lbs.
9. Rotate gauging plate until areas are parallel with discs.
10. Position gauge shaft assembly into carrier so dial indicator rod is centered on gauge area of gauge block.
11. Zero dial indicator, then push down until needle rotates 3/4 of a turn clockwise and tighten in this position.
12. Center the indicator by rocking gauge shaft slowly back and forth until greatest deflection is obtained.
13. Zero dial indicator at greatest point of deflection and repeat the rocking action of the gauge shaft to verify the zero setting.
14. Rotate gauge shaft until dial indicator rod does not touch the gauge block.
15. Record the actual number on dial indicator, not the number representing how far the needle travels.
16. All drive pinion gears are manufactured to a nominal depth. There are no markings on pinion for depth. Dial indicator reading represents is the shim selection.
17. Remove bearing caps, depth gauge tools and install correct shim.
