Heater Core Case: Service and Repair

HEATER UNIT

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations, precautions, and procedures in the SRS section before performing repairs or service.

1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. When the engine is cool, open the heater valve, and drain the engine coolant from the radiator.

WARNING: Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot; the engine coolant is under pressure and could severely scald you.

3. Remove the intake manifold chamber.

4. Open the clamp, then disconnect the heater valve cable from the heater valve arm.

5. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater unit.

CAUTION: Engine coolant will damage paint. Quickly rinse any spilled engine coolant from painted surfaces.

NOTE: Engine coolant will run out when the hoses are disconnected; drain it into a clean drip pan.

6. Remove the two mounting nuts from the heater unit.

NOTE: When removing the mounting nuts, take care not to damage or bend the fuel pipes, brake pipes, etc.


7. Remove the dashboard.

8. Remove the mounting bolts and mounting nuts in the following sequence, then remove the steering hanger beam.
9. Remove the evaporator.

10. Disconnect the connector from the mode control motor, then remove the mounting bolt and the heater unit.
11. Install in the reverse order of removal. Make note of the following items.

- Apply sealant to the grommets.
- Do not interchange the inlet and outlet heater hoses.
Make sure that the clamps are secure.
- Loosen the bleed bolt on the engine, and refill the radiator and coolant reservoir with the proper engine coolant mixture. Tighten the bleed bolt when all the trapped air has escaped and engine coolant begins to flow from it.
- Connect all cables, and make sure they are properly adjusted.
- Enter the anti-theft code for the radio, then enter the customer's radio station presets.
