Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Ignition Cable Routing Inspection

CAUTION: Use electrically Insulated pliers when handling spark plug wires, with the engine running. Use care to prevent an electrical shock

NOTE: Twist the spark plug boot one-half turn in order to release the boot. Pull on the spark plug boot only. Do not pull on the spark plug wire or the wire could be damaged.

1. Check the spark plug wires for improper routing which can cause misfiring.
2. Check each wire for signs of cracks or splits.
3. Check each wire for arc through.
4. Check each wire for carbon tracking.
5. Repair or replace the wire(s) as necessary.

The spark plug wiring has an outside insulation layer of silicone. The silicone spark plug boots form a tight seal on the spark plugs. The wire boots also seal around the distributor cap and ignition coil terminals. This tight seal prevents voltage arching.
