Dealers should be aware that on some XJ6 vehicles a clicking noise which varies with road speed, usually only audible to rear seat passengers, can be apparent.
The source of this noise is the Service Interval Counter and not the rear axle or drive shaft as the noise suggests.
The noise can be eliminated by lubricating the worm gear detailed in the following procedure:
^ Remove trunk forward cover trim.
^ Remove Service Interval Counter from trunk. (Two 5/16" bolts)
^ Remove 4 screws from top face of Service Interval Counter, and detach lower half of case.
^ Lubricate motor worm drive gear with light grease.
^ Reassemble - reinstall.
Repair Operation shop time - 0.25 hours.
If the above work is performed as a warranty, enter the bulletin number, J85/09, as the causal part number with a defect code of 40.
