Timing Chain: Service and Repair

Refer to Fig. 11 when performing the following procedure.
1. Remove timing cover as described under TIMING COVER.
2. Remove elastic band from upper dampers, then push back lock tabs on upper tensioner pedestal securing bolts (3).
3. Remove pedestal bolts and tab washer.
4. Remove pedestal/tensioner assembly and chain dampener (1).
5. Remove tensioner pivot pin (2), and remove tensioner from pedestal.
6. Push back lock tabs on upper static damper securing bolts (5), and remove bolts, tab washer and damper.
7. Remove damper pedestal and upper timing chain (6).
8. Remove lower timing chain tensioner securing bolts (11), then the tensioner assembly.
9. Remove lower timing chain from intermediate sprocket (9).
10. Remove intermediate sprocket and bearing, then the oil pump drive chain damper (16, 17, 18).
11. Push back lock tabs on lower static damper securing bolts, then remove bolts and damper.
12. Install crankshaft pulley securing bolt. Tighten to specifications.

13. Install chain link removal/replacement tool No. JD130 or equivalent, to master link (1) Fig. 12. Rotate engine as necessary to align link.
14. Be sure tool aligns to master link. Position ``E'' gate (2) Fig. 12, to tool and seat behind chain (3).
15. Tighten tool handle, ensuring extractor cones (4) Fig. 12, line up with link pins and remove link.
16. Loosen tool carefully ensuring no components fall into pan. Remove oil pump chain.
17. Remove lower timing chain from sprockets, then using a punch, remove crankshaft sprocket.
