Sunroof / Moonroof: Description and Operation

The sliding roof has several features, which include: a tilt facility, one touch opening and closing (in slide), consistent closing (in slide and from tilt openings of less than 4 mm), and a wind deflector.

The sliding roof is operated by a cable and lever mechanism driven by an electric motor. A sliding roof control module (SRCM) controls the motor in response to the selections made on a switch in the roof console, or an input from the security system (for automatic closing). Both the motor and the SRCM are easily accessed by removing the roof console.

In the event of an electrical failure the operating mechanism can be turned manually. This is done by inserting a wide bladed screwdriver into a slot in the drive gear of the motor (turning clockwise to open and counter clockwise to close the sliding roof). Manual operation disengages the drive gear from the motor. Before restoring electrical operation the drive gear must be turned in the reverse direction for one quarter of a turn to re-engage the motor.

The SRCM is held in position by clips and has two electrical connectors interfacing with the motor and with the roof console switch/security system. Prior to installing a new SRCM, the sun roof must be in a neutral closed position. This gives the SRCM a sliding roof position datum, to ensure accurate and consistent operation. Obstacle sensing operates only on closing, in the slide mode only. If the sliding roof lid encounters an obstruction between the open positions of 4 mm and 2OO mm the SRCM detects the increased load on the motor. It then reverses the motor to drive the sliding roof to the fully open position.

The seal around the sliding roof lid has a metal inner section. Once removed, the seal cannot be reused. A new seal must be installed on the lid using a Jaguar approved crimping tool.
