Engine - Poor Idle/Low Speed/Cruise Performance

ISSUE:

1995 MY vehicles in the model and VIN ranges listed below may display the following symptoms.

SYMPTOMS

Idle hesitation or instability following cold start.

Hesitation or instability at cruising speeds of 50 - 60 mph (80-100 km/h).

Throttle abruptness ("lurching" or hesitation) at low speed, low throttle application with a warm engine.

These symptoms result from an unfavorable combination of fuel volatility and ignition timing factors. The ECM EPROM has been revised to correct these conditions from VIN 724500 Sedan (4.0L NA) Range, VIN 740021 XJR Sedan and VIN 197550 XJS (4.0L) Range.

ACTION:

If customers complain of the symptoms listed above on vehicles within the quoted VIN range and all other engine parameters are within specification, the ECM will require upgrading. To upgrade an ECM to the latest specifications, follow the procedure outlined below.

ECM UPGRADE PROCEDURE

1. Complete the Dealer Supplied Information section on a photocopy of the Engine Management EPROM Upgrade form.

2. Call the Jaguar Technical Hotline (1-800-910-8324).

3. The Jaguar Technical Service Representative will verbally request the Dealer Supplied Information from the form and assign a Case Number which must be written on the form.

NOTE:
A copy of the completed Engine Management EPROM Upgrade form must be retained in the vehicle service file.

4. Ship the ECM together with a copy of the completed form and a return address label showing the Repair Order Number to Lucas Industries, Inc., via Federal Express Priority Overnight Service. The following information must be included on the Federal Express Airbill.

The ECM will be upgraded the following day and returned to the dealer via FedEx Priority Overnight Service.

IMPORTANT:
Inspect the vehicle to determine if a revised air pump hose with a vacuum bleed has been fitted. If the existing air pump hose has no vacuum bleed, replace the hose with the correct revised hose for the vehicle.
Refer to Service Bulletin 18-47 for the appropriate part numbers and warranty information for step 5.
