Removal






REMOVAL

1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Disconnect and lower or remove necessary exhaust components.
4. Remove engine-to-transmission bending braces or engine collar.
5. Remove starter motor. Starter - Removal
6. If transmission is being removed for overhaul, remove transmission oil pan, drain fluid and reinstall pan. Service and Repair
7. Remove torque converter access structural collar.
8. Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until converter bolts are accessible. Then remove bolts one at a time. Rotate crankshaft with socket wrench on dampener bolt.
9. Mark propeller shaft and axle yokes for assembly alignment. Then disconnect and remove propeller shafts. Drive Shaft - Removal
10. Disconnect wires from the input and output speed sensors.
11. Disconnect wires from the transmission range sensor and the solenoid/pressure switch assembly.


















12. Disconnect gearshift cable from transmission manual valve lever.
13. Disconnect shift cable and electrical connector from transfer case.
14. Support rear of engine with safety stand or jack.
15. Raise transmission slightly with service jack to relieve load on skid plate and transmission support.
16. Remove bolts securing rear support and cushion to transmission and skid plate.
17. Remove bolts attaching skid plate to frame and remove skid plate. Skid Plate - Removal









18. Disconnect transfer case vent hose.
19. Remove transfer case. Removal and Replacement
20. Remove fill tube bracket bolts and pull tube and vent hose out of transmission. Retain fill tube seal. Remove the bolt attaching transfer case vent tube to converter housing.
21. Remove the fuel line bracket bolt.
22. Disconnect fluid cooler lines at transmission.
23. Remove crank shaft position sensor.
24. Remove all converter housing bolts.
25. Carefully work transmission and torque converter assembly rearward off engine block dowels.
26. Hold torque converter in place during transmission removal.
27. Lower transmission and remove assembly from under the vehicle.
28. To remove torque converter, carefully slide torque converter out of the transmission.
