Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

MONOLITHIC & DUAL BED MONOLITHIC TYPE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS

NOTE: These converters are not serviceable. If defective, the entire unit must be replaced.

PELLET TYPE & THREE-WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTERS
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Clamp vacuum pump (part of Tool Kit J-25077-01) to tailpipe outlet, Fig. 8.
3. Connect air hose (at least 80 psi) to fitting on vacuum pump.
4. Remove plug from bottom of converter using tools included in Tool Kit J-25077-01. Heating the plug may ease the removal.

NOTE: Vacuum pump must be in operation before removing the plug to prevent loss of pellets.

5. Clamp container/vibrator unit on converter, Fig. 9. On 80-82 models us Tool J-25077-6.
6. Remove air hose from vacuum pump and connect it to fitting on vibrator.

NOTE: Approximately ten minutes is needed to empty pellets from converter.

7. Disconnect air hose, remove container and discard pellets, then fill container with new pellets and attach to converter.
8. Connect air hose to fitting on vacuum pump to fill converter with pellets.
9. When converter is full, remove container/vibrator unit while maintaining air pressure at vacuum pump.
10. Install plug on bottom of converter as follows:
a. Thread screw into bridge and position bridge inside opening, then remove screw without moving the bridge.
b. Insert screw through washer and plug.
c. Carefully thread screw into bridge and tighten enough to obtain an air-tight seal.
11. Disconnect air hose from vacuum pump, remove pump from tailpipe and lower vehicle.
