Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

No-Load Current Test

Fig. 2 No-load current test connections:

1. Connect test equipment as shown, and turn tester load control knob fully counterclockwise, then operate starter and note voltage.
2. Using mechanical tachometer, determine exact motor RPM. Connect tachometer by removing seal from end of drive end housing and clean grease from end of armature shaft.
3. Disconnect battery cable from starter.
4. Turn load control knob clockwise until voltage reading is exactly that obtained in step 1.
5. If ammeter does not read 77 amps with a starter motor RPM of 8900-9600 on 1980-81 models, or 67 amps with a starter motor RPM of 7380-9356 on 1982-87 models, repair or replace starter as necessary.
