INFORMATION

This I.S. Note contains update information on the 1983 Jeep six-cylinder ignition system.

Filing Instructions

File this I.S. Note in the vinyl binder supplied with Jeep Supplement No. 1 to the 1982 Jeep Technical Service Manual.

1. SPARK CONTROL SYSTEM

The spark control system on 1983 six-cylinder engines uses a knock sensor, along with the MCU unit to sense when audible spark knock is about to occur.

Because of the physical/electrical tolerances required to make the spark control system work, the result of these tolerances is occasional audible spark knock of relatively short duration and intensity.

This occasional, audible knock is a normal condition and will not cause engine damage, a decrease in fuel economy or loss of emission control.

Do not attempt to correct an audible spark knock on 1983 six-cylinder engines unless knock duration is lengthy or constant and occurs primarily above 3,000 rpm; which could be an indication of an improperly adjusted distributor.

2. SPARK PLUG WIRE PROTECTIVE SHIELD

A sleeve-type protective shield has been added to the number four spark plug wire on 1983 Jeep sixcylinder engines built after engine build date code 210C07. The shield entered production as a running change and was added to prevent the number four spark plug wire from rubbing against the dipstick tube bracket.

The shield may also be installed on vehicles in dealer stock with a six-cylinder engine built prior to the indicated build date.
PROCEDURE

1. Inspect the spark plug wire on number four cylinder.

a. If a ribbed, plastic shield has been installed on the number four wire, further action is not necessary.

b. If a shield has not been installed on the number four wire, obtain a shield and proceed to step 2.

2. Disconnect the number four spark plug wire from the distributor cap. Slide the shield over the wire and reconnect the wire to the distributor cap.

NOTE: The shield is split lengthwise and can also be installed without removing the plug wire if desired.
