Dimmer Switch: Service and Repair

Fig. 1 Adjusting dimmer switch:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove instrument panel lower shroud.
3. Remove steering column to instrument panel retaining bolts, then lower steering column as necessary.
4. Tape actuator rod to column, then remove dimmer switch retaining screws and pull switch from actuator rod.
5. Reverse procedure to install, then adjust dimmer switch as follows:
a. Depress switch slightly, then insert a {3/32} inch drill bit into switch gauge hole.
b. Move switch toward steering wheel to remove excess lash from actuator rod, then torque switch retaining screws to 35 inch lbs.
c. Remove drill bit, then test dimmer switch function by operating actuator lever.
