GEARSHIFT LEVER HANDLE RELEASE BUTTON SERVICE
On some 1984-85 Cherokee/Wagoneer 70 Series models with automatic transmission, the release button in the gearshift lever handle may be difficult to operate.
Service correction is as follows.
GEARSHIFT LEVER HANDLE AND SHIFT PAWL RETURN SPRING:
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the chrome bezel (A) that retains the release button (B) in the gearshift lever handle (E) (see illustration). Use a small screwdriver to pry the bezel out of the handle.
2. Remove and discard the original release button (B) (see illustration).
3. Lubricate surfaces (C & D) of the replacement release button, P/N 8953 000 211, with AMC white spray grease, P/N 899 3887 (US) P/N 1472 (CAN), or equivalent (see illustration).
4. Install replacement release button and the bezel, (A), in the gearshift lever handle. Be sure the bezel is fully seated in the handle.
NOTE: Install the replacement release button with the (D) side of the button facing downward.
5. Unsnap the gearshift indicator bezel. Lift the bezel upward and secure it to the shift lever handle for access to the shift lever mechanism.
6. Remove and discard the original shift pawl return spring, (F), (see illustration).
7. Install replacement shift pawl return spring, P/N 8953 003 350.
8. Thoroughly lubricate all the moving parts of the gearshift lever mechanism with AMC white spray grease, P/N 899 3887 (US) P/N 1472 (CAN) or equivalent.
9. Snap the gearshift indicator bezel into place.
