AMC Ignition System Ignition Feed to Control Unit Test

The Ignition coil Primary Test must be performed before proceeding with the following test.
1. With ignition switch in the On position, disconnect two wire connector at control unit and connect voltmeter between terminal F2 and ground, Fig. 2.
a If voltmeter does indicate within .2 volts of battery voltage, replacer control unit and proceed to step 3.
b. If voltmeter does not indicate within .2 volts of battery voltage, proceed to step 2.
2. Check for corroded dash connector and ignition switch for causes of voltage reduction and repair as necessary. After completing repairs, disconnect ignition coil wire from distributor cap and check for spark.
a. If spark is present at coil wire, control unit and ignition feed are satisfactory.
b. If spark is not present at coil wire, replace control unit.
3. Connect control unit two wire connector, then disconnect control unit four wire connector and connect ammeter between terminal C1 and ground.
a. If ammeter indicates 1 amp, control unit is satisfactory.
b. If ammeter indicates other than 1 amp, replace control unit.
