1985 Cherokee/Wagoneer 70 Series models with 4-cylinder engine and AX4 or AX5 manual transmission are equipped with an upshift indicator light. The light (A) is in the left side of the instrument cluster near the coolant warning light (Fig. 1).

UPSHIFT INDICATOR LIGHT DIAGNOSIS
Upshift indicator light operation, circuitry and diagnosis are detailed in the 1984 and 1985 Cherokee/Wagoneer Electrical Troubleshooting Manuals. If, on some vehicles, the indicator light remains on in top gear, check the upshift switch (B) in the transmission (Fig. 2) as follows:
1. Inspect the upshift switch for a washer.
a. If the switch does have a washer on it, proceed to step 2.
b. If the switch does not have a washer on it, proceed to step 4.
2. Remove the upshift switch from the transmission case. Discard the washer and reinstall the switch in the case.
3. Reconnect the switch wires and check and adjust transmission lubricant level.
4. Verify upshift switch operation with an ohmmeter. The switch should only be open in top gear.
