Recall - Catalytic Converter Replacement: Overview

90AMCJEEP06 No. 287T

May, 1990
To: All Jeep/Eagle Dealers

Subject: Emissions Recall # 287T -- Catalytic Converter Replacement

Models: 1987 Model Year Jeep Comanche, Cherokee, Wagoneer and Wrangler Equipped With a 2.5L Engine (Federal and California) and Built Before October 16, 1986

The listed model vehicles may be in violation of Federal and California emissions standards as a result of catalyst deterioration. The emission levels of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen may exceed allowable limits. To correct the condition, an improved catalytic converter must be installed to replace the original. The improved catalyst is designed without a heat blanket under the top cover of the can, providing increased durability.

Vehicles identified through our warranty records which have already been repaired by installing a blanketless catalytic converter have been excluded from the recall population.

Details of this service action are explained in the following sections.

Vehicle List

Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same location) will receive a vehicle list with this letter arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved vehicles.

Each Jeep/Eagle dealer without a Vehicle List will receive an information copy of this letter by Compak Mail for use in performing the service on involved vehicles upon request.

California Recall Completion Label Requirement

There is a California Air Resources Board requirement to affix a label to the vehicle to certify that the emissions recall was completed. A completion label for this recall (# 287T) is included in each letter being mailed to owners in California. Extra labels will be supplied with this letter to the Los Angeles and San Francisco Zone Offices only for dealer use as needed. Refer to the Service Procedure of this letter for application instructions.

Note: The Recall # 276T completion label included in the parts package specified for this recall must not be used. Apply only the new Recall # 287T Label.
