REVISED IGNITION DISTRIBUTOR SERVICE PROCEDURES
The distributor removal/installation procedures and the stator removal procedure, in the January, 1987, edition of component manual INJ, MPI, have been revised.
DISTRIBUTOR REMOVAL
1. Scribe a mark (A) on the distributor housing directly below the number one spark plug wire post of the distributor cap.
2. Disconnect the distributor electrical connector.
3. Remove the distributor cap.
4. Remove the distributor hold down clamp bolt.
5. Remove the distributor.
DISTRIBUTOR INSTALLATION
1. Remove number one spark plug and wire.
2. On vehicles equipped with A/C, remove the electrical cooling fan and shroud assembly from the radiator. This will provide room to turn the engine with a socket and ratchet using the vibration damper bolt.
3. Place a finger over the spark plug hole and turn the engine in a clockwise direction until compression pushes the finger away from the hole. Continue turning the engine until the timing mark on the vibration damper (B) lines up with the zero (0) on the engine front cover.
NOTE: The timing mark is on the edge of the vibration damper closest to the engine front cover.
4. Using a straight blade screwdriver, turn the oil pump gear shaft (C) until the slot is slightly past the 11 o'clock position, NOTE: The oil pump gear shaft is located down in the distributor hole.
5. Without engaging the distributor gear into the cam gear, position the distributor into the hole in the engine block. Be sure the distributor gasket is installed.
6. Visually line up the hold down ear (D) of the distributor housing with the hold down clamp bolt hole (E).
7. Turn the rotor to the 4 o'clock position.
8. Slide the distributor down into the block until it seats. Keep the hold down ear aligned to the hole in the block.
9. The rotor should be in the 5 o'clock position with the trailing edge of the rotor blade lined up with the mark previously scribed on the distributor housing (number one spark plug wire post location).
10. Install the distributor hold down clamp bolt and tighten to 11-14 N-m (8-10 ft.lbs.).
11. Install the distributor cap.
12. Connect the distributor electrical connector.
13. Install number one spark plug and wire.
14. Install electrical cooling fan and shroud assembly
15. Road test.
STATOR REMOVAL
1. Remove the distributor from the engine using the procedure outlined in Distributor Removal.
2. Remove the distributor rotor.
CAUTION: DO NOT position the distributor in a vise. The housing will be deformed. Use wooden V-blocks to support the distributor.
3. Using a small punch and a hammer, remove the distributor drive gear roll pin.
4. Using a brass hammer or rubber mallet, lightly tap the bottom end of the distributor shaft until the drive gear is removed.
5. Remove the distributor shaft from the distributor housing.
6. Remove stator retaining screw (J) and stator positioning arm (H).
7. Remove the stator harness by pushing the grommet (F) into the housing. Remove stator assembly (G).
NOTE: When installing the stator, DO NOT use the wire harness to pull the grommet through the hole. This can break wires in the harness.
FILING INSTRUCTIONS
Record this I.S. Note on pages 39, 40, and 41 of INJ. MPI and file it in the manual.
