Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

4.2L Using Special Magnetic Probe

A magnetic timing probe socket is provided integral with the timing degree scale for use with a special magnetic timing probe.
This special probe detects the milled notch on the vibration damper.

- The probe is inserted through the probe socket until it contacts the vibration damper.
- Ignition timing can then be obtained from a meter or computer printout, depending on the type of equipment being used.
- The probe socket is located at 9.5 degrees ATDC, and the equipment is calibrated to compensate for this location.

Note: Do not use the timing probe socket as a reference to check the ignition timing when using a conventional timing light.
